Comments: For female worshippers who wish to make ritual ablutions (wuduu') before prayers at the Omayyad Mosque, you will find that the womens' wash area is always disappointingly locked. Instead, if you go out through the far right door on the mihraab (facing Mecca) side of the mosque and turn right, in the alley on the left the first door takes you into a women's restroom. The toilets look like somebody hacked at them with a pick-ax and there are only 3 sinks, one of which is broken. There is a woman who sits at the entrance, smoking and taking tips, but I don't know what she does. The sinks are dirty and the floor is treacherously wet. If you're a woman planning on praying in the Omayyad mosque, my best advice is to come prepared. I did want to try and ask an attendant to open the women's room in the Omayyad mosque itself (located in the courtyard area) but I did not get a chance. It's worth a try, though, good luck!

Comments: Location: on the staircase leading to the women's prayer area. What can I say except that one of the most famous Islamic universities in the world greatly disappointed me (a Muslim woman) by having the women's restroom LOCKED. All of the women I saw there came prepared in advance for the prayer.

Comments: Of all the wretched Hole in Floor Washrooms I had the misfortune to visit, this was by far the worst. No ventilation, barely breathable air. No paper of any sort, only just after opening in the morning and it looked as though an army of people had been there after walking through mud (And it was sunny that day). I found that the HOLE was a typical style of bathroom in Damascus, but some this one made some outdoor public restrooms look like a luxury!
