Senate Gallery Building, Tourist cafe and shop. near St. Isaac's Corner of Konnogvardeyskiy Blvd. and Dekabristov| Rating: | Excellent | | Hours: | Business hours | | Gender: | Private cubicles with sink | | Fee: | Free | | Details: | clean
safe | | Style: | | | Comments: | There are three little units tucked into a large souvenir shop and cafT. They are clean and unlike many places, private. (The requisite babushka is there, but you can close the door.) The cafT is limited to bottles of water and soda with a few small eatablles, but if you are at St. Isaac's or anywhere near The Admiralty area, its a great excuse to stop.- |
The Hermitage, close by the bottom of The Ambassador's Staircase Palace Square| Rating: | Good | | Hours: | Business hours | | Gender: | Stalls and Urinals | | Fee: | Free | | Details: | clean
safe | | Style: | | | Comments: | We found this bathroom cleaner than a previous report suggested we'd find. It wasn't anyplace I would do surgery, but there was no line and the floors were for the most part, clean and dry. The babushka had a mop in hand. Perhaps she had just finished the monthly wiping, but I prefer to think it was a sign she was busy keeping it up to par. A ten rouble note would not go amiss as a tip and might help insure the future cleanliness. |
The Peter and Paul Fortress, just inside Peter's Gate Just inside Peter's Gate. Mobile bus bathrooms| Rating: | Adequate | | Hours: | Business hours | | Gender: | Low partitioned stalls and urinals | | Fee: | Free | | Details: | safe | | Style: | | | Comments: | These bus bathrooms were certainly different. The partitions were low enough between stalls to have been pointless and the babushka was rather stern. It was clean enough to feel comfortable using the urinal, but the stalls, while not inspected directly, looked a bit dodgy. These were a step up from porta-pottys, but just barely and should be considered for emergency use only for women and for men, only if standing is an option. |
Baltic Star Hotel, Strelna Very near Peterhof Part of the Great (Konstantine?) Palace Governement Conference Center| Rating: | Excellent | | Hours: | 24 hours | | Gender: | Fully western and civilized | | Fee: | Free | | Details: | clean
safe | | Style: | | | Comments: | The Baltic Star Hotel is a five star hotel complex that is part of the Russian governement's political conference center. This is where Russian politicians bring themselves and foreign big shots to meet and chat. G. W. Bush has been there. The hotel will also host Paul McCartney and his entourage in June '04. The Palace and conference building is open to the public for tours. Don't bother. It has been refurbished without much regard to history and to get in you have to pass though airport style security checks. However, the hotel is convenient when driving to or from Peterhof. Empty, but convenient. The bathrooms were perfect. Looked like they had never been used and there was no babushka. Spotless, functional. An oasis. Better than home. It would be polite to spring for a drink in the bar or even water in the lobby, before wandering downstairs to relieve yourself. Don't be alarmed by the absence of people. It is very expensive to stay there and inconvenient to the city. Since it's primary purpose was to house politicians for conferences, there just isn't a large group of people/tourists interested in staying there while visiting St. Petersburg. |

aesthetically special | | Style: | | | Comments: | There was a babushka lady who oversaw the toilets. She took my money, and gave me a piece of purple toilet paper, about six inches in length, of which I saved a piece for my journal. No hand washing facilities. |
