Comments: There's no running water to flush anywhere in any of the toilets in the Annapurna Sanctuary, let alone electricity to light your way in the middle of the night. Bring extra candles, and don't forget a lighter. It's pitch black from 7pm until 7am - and you'll be stuffed if your candle blows out halfway down the corridor to the loo. There is NO toilet paper - BYO. You can buy paper at some stops, but you'll pay more for paper than you would your daal baht. If it isn't kleenex tissues, then it's a roll of paper closely resembling pink crepe paper that you wouldn't even use at a birthday party. There's normally a bucket to put the used paper in - don't confuse this as spare paper (like the unfortunate guy we trekked with!) otherwise you'll be using second-hand loo paper! It's manual flush - there's usually another bucket of water with an old tin can to wash your crap away. At Annapurna Base Camp, if you're the first one up in the morning, you'll have to use the tin to crack open the layer of ice that has formed on the water bucket. You'll also have to prepare your legs to hold you steady so you don't ass-over on the ice floor. If you're a chick, then organise your hormones so you don't have your period during your trek. You'll most likely suffer with the once-every-three-days shower, and the next people in the bathroom will definitely gag when they see the bucket of used paper and other contraptions that are used. All toilets are unisex. Which way do you face? I'm yet to figure this out myself. It's trial and error - sometimes the holes are so small and skanky, you'll want to not hang around too long to change directions. Otherwise, if you find that you're peeing (or number 2-ing) on the floor or on your pants by accident, shuffle forward and get it in the hole! (try not to slip!) Words of wisdom - Be Prepared at any time, at all times!
