Tuesday 22 May  >> The Bathroom Diaries
In the past we’ve looked at travel sites which review hotels, resorts, restaurants and self-catering properties. But this is the first travel site I’ve seen which focuses exclusively on (ahem) public conveniences. The site boasts that it “rates 12000+ public bathrooms in more than 120 countries, providing a wealth of information to both travelers and urban dwellers”.  Site users are invited to submit nominations for the 2007 Golden Plunger Awards, which set out to honour the globe’s most ornate and impressive public loos

A screenshotpox on eco-tourism. Death to luxury travel. The only frontier left for truly experienced travellers (like us) is a tour of the world's most inspiring toilet facilities. Thankfully, this was a tour guide we didn't have to write. The Bathroom Diaries—touted as "the world's largest database of restroom locations"—took care of that business for us. When you gotta go, you gotta go, and it's so much better to know which way the toilet flows. If you have to tinkle in Tehran or doodie in downtown Detroit The Bathroom Diaries will have every journey covered. And if you find yourself out on the go, and want to relieve yourself in the richest environs, check your wireless or your GPS device for one of the award-winning commodes. Sometimes a weary traveller just needs to be pampered. (in Travel)

How to Find a Rest Room -- Anywhere!

The Internet is filled with a lot of useless drivel, it's true, but we thanked God for the 'net when we discovered an amazing Web site called The Bathroom Diaries, a site devoted entirely to the location and ranking of public bathrooms around the world, from Kabul to Reno. Currently up on their site is a fascinating essay, "How Can One Judge a Bathroom."

When You Gotta Go, Ask Vindigo

Mobile information provider Vindigo added a directory of public restrooms [The Bathroom Diaries] and weather reports to its data subscription service last week.... This expansion isn't proceeding at the same pace, however: While Vindigo added weather updates for all markets, its bathroom listings are still limited -- they include Baltimore, but not Washington.

Vindigo 2.0's content now includes local weather from Custom Weather and public restrooms courtesy of The Bathroom Diaries.

Vindigo has added public restroom information for Baltimore, Chicago, New York City, Portland, Ore., and San Francisco. Users can search for bathrooms based on location, or specifics such as changing tables, wheelchair access or cleanliness. They can even locate restrooms known for celebrity sightings.

One of the most useful online journals has to be the fabulous Bathroom Diaries, which chronicle clean loos from Argentina to Zimbabwe with the tagline, "when nature calls, even intrepid travellers prefer a comfortable reply".

Commodious Commodes
Few guidebooks include what travelers really need to know: where to go when you've got to go. Never fear. Thebathroomdiaries.com can help, with a country-by-country list of the best and worst loos in the world. Facilities are user-rated on cleanliness and amenities, as well as celebrity flair (Michael Jackson is said to have relieved himself at Singapore's Raffles Hotel). Japanese department stores are noted for heated toilet seats and the bathroom at Bali's Dirty Duck restaurant gets high marks for the pond surrounding it. Horror stories abound too. One guy warns of the most hazardous toilet in the world: an outhouse cantilevered off the face of a cliff in Mexico.

Vindigo is a handheld staple that we talked about a while ago. But now that version 2.0 is out, we're even more happy with it. For about $25 a year, you can access what amounts to a complete city guide for about 50 cities. The information goes right to your Palm or Pocket PC, and gives you highly detailed information about the locations and quality of local restaurants, movies... even public bathrooms [via The Bathroom Diaries]. Download the free trial. It's worth another look.
