The toilets are frequently clogged and very smelly. Toilet paper can be scarce. I have a feeling that many people use the facilities more for illicit drug use than for what the toilets were intended. While there on an extended stay, I learned to control my liquid intake and relieve myself back at the hotel. |

It is on an island in the middle of the road and you will go down a flight of stairs. Don't be nervous. London has many of these public loos and you will find them marked on most tourist maps. Almost all require a 20p piece and most will have an attendant in a little closet room whom you will sometimes see. These toilets are old, but really interesting and usually pretty clean given their age. I never go anywhere without a 20p piece! |

I subscribed to the library when I was in London in 1988, and I found it amazing. It has a massive tank high above one's head, operated by a long chain. I suppose that is an old-fashioned means to provide a great swoosh of water for the toilet. The seat is also special, because it comes with enormous weights attached which raise the seat when it's unoccupied. My guess is that this dates to the 1880s. |

I found one at the southwest end of Hyde Park, I think it was. This was the evening, the streets were dead, and this corner of the park was, seemingly, dead, but when I went down (or up) the staircase to this bathroom, I was amazed to find that this bathroom was wall-to-wall full of men. I studiously minded my own business, so I don't know if anything 'untoward' was happening in full view, but I think the clientele must have been tall, greyhound-type, uppercrust Englishmen. Anyway, if you're simply interested in privacy (for whatever reason?), the stalls all had real doors. Very private stalls, even if this lavatory is otherwise a very popular social spot. |
