Forbidden City
| Rating: | BAD | | Hours: | Daylight hours | | Gender: | | | Fee: | Small charge | | Details: | | | Style: | | | Comments: | Extremely poor facilities. If China wants the western tourists they should build new restrooms at the Forbidden Palace, etc. Our tour guide thanked us for coming to China and hoped we would come back in two or three years and there 'wouldn't be so many terrifying toilets'. |
General Information
| Rating: | BAD | | Hours: | 24hr | | Gender: | squat | | Fee: | free | | Details: | | | Style: | both | | Comments: | Even the washrooms in the McDonalds were filthy holes in the ground. Of course, ALWAYS bring your own paper, and try to free your hands of any bags or purses before entering, as you will need to pull up your clothing. To avoid dirty pants, roll them up |

Great Wall
| Rating: | BAD | | Hours: | 24hr | | Gender: | | | Fee: | free | | Details: | | | Style: | | | Comments: | I've traveled all over the world and this was the most disgusting bathroom I've ever encountered. Although there were separate stalls, there was a trough running along the ground all throughout the facility, so everyone's business was floating along for all to see. To make things even worse, it had gotten completely stopped up - and I'm not exaggerating when I say that the stuff was quite high. I absolutely could not use that facility, as I wanted to vomit; I decided it was better to suffer in agony instead of staying there for one second longer! |

aesthetically special | | Style: | both | | Comments: | This bathroom is located about 1/2 way through the Forbidden City. One of the few toilets in the grounds. Without hesitation, the attendant led me, the only westerner into the handicapped stall so I could comfortably use the toilet. After that I started looking for handicapped stalls, and to my surprise, there are more in China than I had expected. Some took $$$ to the attendant to get unlocked... but well worth it! |

Great Wall, Badaling section
| Rating: | GOOD | | Hours: | Daylight hours | | Gender: | squat and Western | | Fee: | free | | Details: | clean
safe | | Style: | both | | Comments: | June, 2001 Located along walk up to the Great Wall entrance at Badaling. Fairly clean, with more squat- style than Western toilets. Private stalls, but without toilet paper in each. Free toilet paper can be obtained from a dispenser near the sinks. Hands-free automatic sinks and air-dryers. Go early in the morning while the bathrooms are still clean and bring your own paper just in case. Visited the women's restroom--have no idea what the men's room is like. |

Summer Palace Summer Palace| Rating: | Horrible | | Hours: | Business hours | | Gender: | Squat | | Fee: | Free | | Details: | | | Style: | both | | Comments: | The toilets at the Summer Palace were absolutely atrocious for the Western tourists! It stunk so bad that even if you held your breath, you still could smell the rancid stench. There was no running water, so bring plenty of wet-wipes and antibacterial hand-cleanser. Toilets are holes in the ground. |
