Well, after befriending a few diplomats' children of a similar age, I had enthusiastic tour guides that were eager to show me all that Yaounde had to offer. Unfortunately, that included street food from a 'trusted' street vendor... Flash forward 24 hours. I'm standing on the beautiful black (volcanic) beach at the foot of Mount Cameroon in Limbe. An absolutely uncontrollable NEED overcomes me. You see, as it turns out, I had no 'immunity' to the same food that my guides found to be perfectly digestable. Instead, I became, well, ILL. I'll leave that part to your imagination. Looking around frantically, I see a hut tucked back a bit from the beach. Praying that it's the salvation I'm seeking, I run to it. First thing I notice: no front door- it's gone. Upon entry, it is immediately apparent that this 'facility' hasn't seen a single cleaning product (let alone toilet paper) since it was built- perhaps 20 years earlier. Open 'stalls' with nothing but the porcelain base of a toilet. No T.P., all plugged, but no choice. Needless to say, I would have preferred a pit and a palm leaf to that hell. What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger... right? In the end, I survived, and consider myself a better person for the experience. |
